Explore the art that could’ve been. “I regret to inform you…” is commonly used in rejection letters sent to artists after submitting to exhibitions, calls, and public art opportunities. This exhibition highlights rejected public art proposals that were dreamed up by artists but were not selected to move forward. For every public art piece that you pass by, there were probably two to four others that never came to fruition. This exhibition is about those pieces–the art that never happened.

Opening Reception: October 6, 2023, 6-9pm

On view through October 28, 2023

Crossing Borders is a collaboration between Pink Progression and Athena Project. This group of diverse artists explores the limitless definitions of the term “border.” Is it a line separating two political or geographical areas? An edge or boundary that no one can cross, an invaded place? Or is it something much more personal?

Seen through the very distinct lens of each artist, this term may embrace migrant issues with their concomitant potential for human rights violations and sexual abuse—often a bitter reality for the vulnerable population of women living in the shadows at the edge of a place. Furthermore, borders may mean state lines in the United States which now stand as frightening barriers blocking women's reproductive freedom and endangering those who try to help them.

Colonialism would not exist without borders. It occurs when one nation or culture subjugates another, conquering and exploiting its population while forcing its own language and cultural values upon its people. In addition to these imposed physical divisions, invisible borders exist between people. These borders may be the result of cultural upbringing, race, gender and religion. Such boundaries may effectively prevent empathy, understanding and equality. Cultural challenges result, creating borders of expectation.

This exhibit does far more than simply explore the definition of this term. More specifically, each artist addresses how and at what price these borders may be crossed. In visually and conceptually striking ways, each artist places before the viewer important questions of human rights, cultural prejudices, inherent bias and stereotypes. We invite you to engage in this work, to allow yourself to be drawn into it.

The multi-dimensional narratives in Crossing Borders encourage inspiring, challenging discourse and candid discussions.

Athena Project focuses on getting women* artists out there for the world to know. For the world to grow. Athena Project is the Colorado nonprofit that celebrates and nurtures women’s artistic expression, working actively for equality of opportunity, recognition and pay based on artistic merit alone. We are excited to partner with the artist collective Pink Progression on this exhibition. Progression refers to the hope for progress in the issues that we explore as well as progressing away from prejudice/erroneous stereotypes. Pink Progression is an open collective, representing all gender expressions and identities, that explores social issues and concepts, such as human rights, equality, gender, identity, feminism, and more.

*At Athena Project, we believe that “women” means many things and can be a complicated term. We recognize that the term “women” does not automatically include all aspects of the gender spectrum. We want to create a safer space for the expression and growth for all women, non-binary, and LGBTQIA+ individuals.

After its start in 2013 and iterations in 2016 and 2019, Art of the State 2022 continues the legacy as a juried exhibition showing off the powerful scope of contemporary art from across the state. This open call open to all Colorado artists garnered 2,067 submissions by 734 artists. The jurors worked diligently to select a comprehensive overview of work that strives to capture a wide scope of art from across the state. From those entries, 149 artworks by 142 artists were selected.

The year 2020 is the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment, guaranteeing and protecting women’s constitutional right to vote. This historic centennial offers us the opportunity to commemorate a milestone and recognize the consecutive dates in which all women attained the right to vote in America. In order to inspire social change, collaboration must occur. Working together allows us to share our knowledge and experience, while challenging each other to move outside of our comfort zone and discover a fusion of narratives.

Join Shannon Geis and I Saturday June 27th at 2pm (EST) for a one hour long, virtual workshop as part of SOUND SCENE 2020 that explores individuals' memories of place in relation to our collaborative project Personal Geographies. This event is FREE and open to all. See event description below and click here to register.

What effect do places have on our memories? Why do certain locations stand out in our minds years, or even decades, after the last time we visited them? In this interactive workshop, artist Becky Wareing Steele and oral historian Shannon Geis showcase audio and sculptural highlights from Personal Geographies. Come ready to explore some memories of your own and join the conversation about how to harness memories to create a stronger sense of individual and community identity.

This discussion will include a map making exercise, so participants are encouraged to come to the workshop with paper and colored pencils, markers, or crayons. Participants will then break into smaller groups to discuss questions around their own memories of place and why certain locations stand out in their memories. The workshop will come back together as a large group to allow for time for discussion a brief QnA. Upon exit, participants will be encouraged to record a memory of a place of significance and submit it to Personal Geographies for inclusion in future exhibitions by the project.

*Participants should bring with them: a blank piece of paper and something with which to write and/or draw!
